A licence may be for a specific activity or a number of activities.
Permanent licences are not time-limited. They are either major or small-scale licences.
Major licences:
- Electricity: generation over 50 MW. or where any one generation set is greater than 10 MW;
- Water desalination: production over 2.5 million gallons per day or any one unit with a daily output of more than 500,000 gallons per day;
- Wastewater: over 10,000 cubic-meters per day.
Small-scale licences: all other lower volume Regulated Activities
Self-regulating licences are for companies that intend to generate power and/or desalinate water primarily for internal
consumption. Electricity or water that is in excess of self-supply requirements however, may be offered for sale to
ADWEC. These licences may be time-limited or open but are only applicable to the generation of power and the
desalination of water. There is no sub-division between major and small-scale.
Development licences are used for developments that will generate power, desalinate water or treat wastewater on-site to support the building of their development, for example, services to labour camps. These licences will always be time-limited but, apart from this, their structure is similar to other licences.
Given that development licences are temporary, it is unlikely they will fall into the major licence category.
