 Electricity Distribution Code

The distribution companies (ADDC and AADC) are obliged under Condition 3 of their licences to maintain a Distribution Code, detailing technical parameters and other requirements relating to the connection and the use of their distribution systems.

ADDC and AADC currently operate the same version of the Code which is kept under review by the Distribution Code Review Panel. The Panel meets bi-monthly and is represented by relevant companies in the electricity sector, including generation companies, as well as the Bureau.

All modifications to the Code have to be approved by Bureau in accordance with Article (55) (8) of Law No (2) of 1998, as amended. A new version of the Code was issued in December 2005, which incorporated changes to the definition of ‘high demand’ and ‘low demand’ customers/users and the associated requirements. Some changes were also made to requirements on the provision of information by users.

The Distribution Code contains the following main sections:
  • Distribution Glossary and Definitions
  • Distribution General Conditions
  • Distribution Planning and Connection Code
  • Distribution Operating Code
  • Distribution Data Registration Code

Annex 1 (Engineering Recommendations), which forms part of the Distribution Code, gives detailed technical parameters to be adopted for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi:

  ER No.1 Limits for Harmonics

ER No.3 Connection of Embedded Generation Plant up to 5 MW

ER No.4 Security of Supply Standard

ER No.7 Limits for Voltage Fluctuation
